Google Noto 3D emojis
Say goodbye to flat icons. Google’s Noto 3D emojis bring depth and realistic textures to Android 17. See how digital communication is evolving.

In a surprise move at the "Android Show," Google unveiled Noto 3D, a complete overhaul of the standard emoji set. Moving away from the "flat design" era of the 2010s, these new emojis feature depth, realistic textures, and physics-based animations.
When you send a "Fire" emoji in a message, it now flickers with realistic light that reflects off the chat bubbles. This shift is part of Google’s broader preparation for Spatial Computing, ensuring that emojis look natural whether they are on a flat phone screen or viewed through AR glasses.
What’s Changing in the May 2026 Update?
Hyper-Realistic Textures: Food items like the Burrito or Pizza now have a "glossy" finish, while animals like the Octopus and Cat feature textures that mimic fur and skin.
Gradients & Depth: Unlike Apple’s static flat designs, Noto 3D emojis appear to pop off the screen. The Rainbow emoji now has distinct, luminous bands of light, and the Sakura blossom looks like a delicate, physical petal.
Spatial Readiness: These assets are designed for Spatial Computing. Whether viewed on a Pixel 10 or through AR glasses, these emojis maintain their 3D volume, making them feel like physical objects in your digital space.
Dynamic Lighting: The new emojis react to "system lighting." If your phone is in Dark Mode, the shadows on your 3D emojis will subtly shift to match the darker UI.
The Evolution: From Blobs to 3D
2013–2017: The quirky "Blob" era (High personality, low consistency).
2017–2026: The "Flat" era (Clarity-focused, mirrored Apple’s style).
2026–Present: The "Noto 3D" era (Physicality and expressive realism)
